The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a riveting, informative documentary that follows the trial of seven individuals accused of conspiring to incite riots and destroy government property. It premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2017, receiving great reviews from critics. Based on my personal experience watching this film, I would recommend it to anyone who wants an inside look into one of America’s most pivotal moments.
The trial was originally designed as a way for the state to suppress civil unrest in response to President Nixon’s expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia-Laos. The defendants were charged with conspiracy and inciting riot by allegedly participating in anti-war rallies led by Rennie Davis during May 1968 which caused violence and destruction across Chicago.
