Frida Movie Review 2021 | Oye Cinema Club

By Oye Dimelo Network •  Updated: 06/22/21 •  4 min read

This is a review of the movie Frida. It explores how Frida Kahlo’s life and art intersected, as well as her complicated relationship with Diego Rivera. It also touches on the themes that run through her work: isolation, pain, female empowerment. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to learn more about one of the most important artists in history.

If you’re a fan of biopics, then Frida is the movie for you. The film follows the life and career of Mexican painter and activist Frida Kahlo who has become an icon in her own right. While she suffered much pain during her lifetime, she was able to turn it into art which helped bring attention to important issues like feminism, communism, and classism. If this sounds like something that interests you or someone you know, come check out our review!

Here is a video review of the epic film “Frida” by members of our Cinema Club. We hope you enjoy it!

The film begins by exploring an accident when she was six years old and her mother died from complications related to childbirth; soon after he father remarries which causes friction between them due to their differences in culture and religion creating many challenges for young Frida throughout her childhood including bullying at school because she wears traditional  Mexican clothes.

But even though she faced many difficulties, he father still supported her education and wants for her to have a successful career in medicine. However, after meeting Diego Rivera at school who casts an intellectual spell over the young Frida Kahlo, she eventually drops out of medical school and decides to study painting instead which is not what her father wanted for her.

Rivera then offers his support by inviting Frida into his studio spaces where he would give feedback on her work while they also exchanged ideas about their artwork. In one scene there’s a montage where Frida paints while Diego talks about his wife and their relationship; showing how much pain it caused him when they were apart due to various reasons such as having children or falling in love with other people.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to learn more about one of the most important artists in history. The themes that run through her work, isolation, and pain, are universal. Her life story is inspiring because she never let anything stop her from being herself- even when it was difficult or painful. If you’re looking for a great date night movie with your partner or friend group, go see Frida! It will be worth your time if you want to get into Kahlo’s art but don’t know where to start.
