Delicatessen is a 1991 French-Italian black comedy horror film directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet. The film tells the story of a vegetarian butcher and his wife who keep human flesh in their basement under the false pretense that they are running an upscale Deli. Delicatessen was an international success, grossing over $14 million at the box office on its release to become one of France’s most successful films ever. Its gruesome violence has made Delicatessen something of a cult classic among fans of extreme cinema, while its humor has earned it praise from critics who otherwise found very little worthwhile about it.

The Butcher (Maurice Benichou) runs a small food shop with his wife (who remains unnamed in the film). The shop is a front for their real business – they use it as a cover to disguise the fact that they are cannibals. They serve human meat sausages and sell them as Deli products, claiming they come from escaped circus freaks whom they have captured in order to “provide quality food at affordable prices”.
