Akira – Movie Review 2020 | Oye Cinema Club

By Oye Dimelo Network •  Updated: 06/21/21 •  4 min read

Akira is an anime that was released in 1988, and it’s still a great movie to watch. The animation style is really cool, with the colors looking like they’re melting or changing as you look at them. It also has some scary scenes that will make your skin crawl, but overall it’s just a lot of fun to watch.

If you haven’t seen this movie before, I would definitely recommend checking it out!

-Akira is a 1988 Japanese animated post-apocalyptic cyberpunk action film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō, and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto.

-This anime was first released in Japan on 16th July 1988 to critical acclaim with the final short films not being screened until 1989 at ‘The New York Anime Festival’.

-It has been described as influential to both manga culture outside Japan because it helped demonstrate that cartoons are more than just entertainment for children but can be used as high art comparable to any live action movie or television show.

-“Akira” also brought forth our new ideas about what animation could do which led to the release of many more films.

The Storyline: The story follows Kaneda, a biker gang leader whose best friend Tetsuo gets involved in a military arms project that goes wrong when it turns him into a superpowered being determined to destroy everything around him along with all memories of anything before he became an amnesiac.  -Kaneda’s motorcycle gang (the Capsules) and the Clowns motorcycle gang are sworn enemies who fight each other for entertainment in Tokyo’s slums.  Akira movie Review | Oye Cinema Club

-Tetsuo eventually tries to transfer his power to another person by holding their face close to his own which succeeds on both occasions but also has detrimental effects such as causing massive destruction or loss of memory due to the excess energy.

-Kaneda is eventually captured by the military and meets Kei, a young woman with psychokinetic powers who can move objects without physically touching them. Kaneda tries to escape from her car but she uses her power on him. He asks for Akira’s name when he wakes up in hospital where his girlfriend Kaori tells him Tetsuo has been taken away via helicopter and that it was all over TV news channels. Katsuhiro Otomo brings these two characters together as they both have something to do with Akira; Kaneda knew what happened back then and Kei is one of its last survivors.
